Sports Hall Athletics

Year 11 leaders have been running a year 7 inter form sports hall athletics competition as part of their level 1 in sports leadership course.

Year 7 forms were invited to participate in this competition that was planned and managed by year 11 students during their core PE lessons.

Sportshall Athletics was created in the United Kingdom by George Bunner in 1976 to introduce young people to the joy of athletics. He recognised that training on dark winter nights was unappealing and often meant that many youngsters left athletics clubs over the winter and didn’t return in the summer! However, he encouraged them to come back with inventions such as the Reversaboard which enabled athletes to strike and turn in the same movement and run in the opposite direction. Soon most athletic events were made possible within a sports hall environment.

The leaders completed a variety of roles including time keeper, race official, team manager and warm up coach.  The leaders now have the opportunity to further their skills by coaching primary school students after school on Thursdays in preparation for their family festival on 4th February.

The event saw some excellent competition and provided all students in year 7 with the opportunity to participate in an intra school competition.  Events included a hurdles race, obstacle race and 2 lap relay.  7  were the overall winners, demonstrating some excellent team and individual events.  Students now have the opportunity to compete in an interschools sports hall athletics competition on 3rd February in Daventry.
